They are the doomed lovers whose story is a cornerstone of one of TV's biggest ever hits.

And the tension was palpable as the stars playing Ross and Elizabeth in the remake of Poldark filmed their first scenes together in Britain's Wiltshire on Tuesday.

There were smouldering looks aplenty as Aidan Turner and Heida Reed traded lines in the sleepy market town of Corsham.

Aidan, 30, looked every inch the dashing former British Army officer, with his character's tale of course beginning when he returns home to Cornwall after taking part in the defeated imperial forces during the American Revolutionary War

He wore a trendy outfit, for 1783, with his admiral hat, blue woolen jacket and waistcoat underlining Ross Poldark's status as a member of the upper class.

Heida, whose character ends up marrying Ross' cousin Francis after believing him killed in action, wore a stunning hat and brown dress combo that was the height of 18th century fashion.

But while their bittersweet reunion was exciting, aficionados of the book and television series will be even more excited to see the first picture of the main character's arch rival George Warleggan.

Jack Farthing looks like the perfect choice to play the cunning cad, who as a member of the 'new money' class of industrialists and bankers is considered an upstart by the aristocracy.

Of course, while Ross and Elizabeth are each other's first love, they are bound for very different paths, with the former army man ending up marrying one of his servants.

The new BBC production has taken over the streets of Corsham, with the historic market town's main street being transformed into something resembling its former glory.

Smoke was blown across the set to create atmosphere as dozens while dozens of extras in period dress stood around on the street.

Art director Becky Harvey told the Wiltshire Times: 'Corsham was an excellent choice for us as so many of the buildings are from the right period and are quite similar to ones in Truro.

'We had to create shop fronts for some of the buildings but they fit in really well with what is already here.'

The original production, which drew a 15m audience, had its own location scenes shot in Cornwall, where the book series is set.
